6mp..prednisone…bleh

Question:

Hi Amanda!  I do T’ai Chi and meditate; both help tremendously.  Am planning on going back to yoga again (it’s been years since I did it) soon too.  Good luck with your GI visit. Christine CD

amanda lol…and good luck with the 6mp increase..i am a trained behavioral counselor and i do several types of relaxation exercises for pain relief..the old visual, deep breath stretching each part of the body to a count of 6 one…and one i invented lol…it came out of being in so much pain i was seeing stars kind of..i envision a kaleidoscope…and i look thru and i turn it so my ‘pain colors’ make all kinds of designs..that helps other helps..music…my walkman(waiting for my mp3 player to get fixed)..and i visualize dancing which i used to do a lot of.. another physical thing which has helped me a lot…we bought a small, inexpensive massager thingy at the pharmacy..it was about 20 dollars..my husband puts that on my lower back..it vibrates just enough that i can feel it in my gut..and it seems to help a lot..often puts me to sleep.. i know about the pred..i am still on a small bit and still swollen up from the larger amount i was on all summer..just got my winter pred clothes<g>..u know the bigger ones..my pred shoes..the bigger ones for swollen feet..nothing else seems to work…it will come off when i am feeling well enough to exercise more..and even then it will be a long time..hope things work out better for u annie

Some people don’t respond at all.  So it’s best to give averages.  If someone expects it to work in 1 month they will most likely be very disappointed.  Also sometimes it appears to work faster but it’s more a pyschological effect.

hi amanda gee i am on almost the same stuff lol…9 tabs of asacol, 50mg of 6mp..now on 5mg pred from a flare i had back in may…i was on 100mg of 6mp and feeling a lOT better than this…but we had to decrease it due to liver function problems..wish i could be on it again..it took several months to affect me..about 5 til i noticed anything..but wow..it really helped me a lot..i dont take stuff like fish oils etc..lots of things upset my tummy..like that…sometimes flares just seem to h appen no matter what u are doing…if he will give u more 6mp..go for it..u might experience..if u havent yet..some of the 6mp side effects..like horrid nausea(feels like u are pregnant..only worse…) u can ask him for compazine for that..it really helped me the first couple of months..then the nausea slowly went away and i was fine..all my ibd symptoms were better with the 6mp..i didnt need the pain stuff for joint pain..i stopped running fevers…etc etc..now on 50 mg i am kinda back where i was before..but still better than with no 6mp..definitely take it..but be sure u get all your blood work done as often as u are told to..i still go about every 3 weeks..u wont know if the 6mp is causing a problem..the blood work will tell your md before it causes any real damage.. take care and good luck annie

Some people do respond faster to 6 mp.

Response:

Also ask your doc about some allergic reactions to asacol that includes diarhea, etc that can mimic a flare. He definetely needs to increase the dose of 6mp.

Response:

Doing the fishoils and flaxseed oils is a good start but it’s just not enough .  Also I’m hoping you are taking Mineral Ascorbates for your source of Vitamin C and not Ascorbic Acid. The obvious reason being Ascorbic Acid as the name implies is acidic and may not be doing your guts any favors. There is a book out called  "What Your Doctor Doesn’t Know about Nutritional Medicine Maybe Killing you" By Ray D. Strand It’s a good read!  and it may help you in finding your nutritional needs.

First off 6MP can take 3-6+ months to be effective.  Generally less than 3 it’s not effective.  Can take up to 9 months for maximum effectiveness.  So if you were feeling great "immediately" it was due to the prednisone.  It’s no wonder you flared when you reduced the pred.  How much do you weigh?  You should be taking 1.5mg/kg, if you weigh say 150 pounds that would be 100mg. If your doctor didn’t explain this to you ask him about it.  And yes increase the 6MP ASAP, because the 3-6 months starts ticking once you’re on a weight-based dose.  In other words, you still have another 3+ months to go.
